Prairie visitor

January 01 2009:
I just discovered this unpublished posting. Although everything changed just 2 weeks after I wrote it, the sentiment still rings true.

Last weekened we had the pleasure of hosting ChrisNess again. They are so good at making that trip across the water to see us. And this time there was a bonus.

Ness' longtime friend Erica joined them. She flew in from Winnipeg the night before and we were fortunate that she had the time to travel over to the island to see us too! Erica has been a part of our family for as long as I can remember (well, as long as I can remember from our Winnipeg days). She was on a weeklong hiatus from being an adult (and especially the part about being a mommy). Her wonderful hubby insisted she go recharge her batteries by playing at Nessa's house for awhile. It was a very special weekend for us, seeing those 2 together again, especially now that they are adults. We shared the memories of all their goofy antics and it goes without saying that the laughter brought tears to my eyes and a smile to my heart. Somehow I think they can still be as goofy! Chris will probably attest to that!

This was also ChrisNess' introduction to our newest family member Bear. I think even Chris enjoyed meeting him. Ness has volunteered to come over to dogsit so we can get away for a weekend. Sounds great to me!

It was hard to say goodbye to the 3 of them. I really hope Erica & family can make their way to our door sometime in the not too distant future....before their girls realize that DisneyWorld is almost as close as Vancouver Island.

This weekend I was a fisher's widow again. Bob returned to Port Alice with Sveinn for a few more days of ocean fishing. My 10 yr old great-nephew Ryan joined them. Bob quite enjoyed helping Ryan reel in a fish. They brought home 6 salmon. More good eats for the winter.

So that left me alone with the 'boys'. We had fun. Lots of walks, but I thought it was time Bear got introduced to the Jeep. We rarely take the dogs in a vehicle anymore as the neighbourhood is perfect to walk them and no need to 'drive' to go for a walk.

I've been enjoying a fur-free jeep since June (when I spent 3 hours vacuuming it) but all good things must come to an end. I reinstalled the 'Soggy Dog' seat cover (great invention...ChrisNess bought it for us last year) and whistled for the dogs. Chile was pretty excited, he loves getting in the Jeep (he actually hates travelling inside a vehicle, but the destination usually makes it worthwhile). Up and in. Then he assumed his position. Which is to say he sprawled full length on the seat.
Next is the rookie. He had no clue what he was supposed to do. I had to pick him up (he's getting sooooo heavy) and coerce him into the back seat. He's all legs, mouth and paws going every direction but in! I can only imagine what was going through his head, thinking I was throwing him into a big kennel! Well, Chile wasn't about to share the back seat, so Bear finally gave up trying to climb onto it, and sat on the floor.

Sort of.

He was trying to help me shift, climbing up the seat divider and peering over my shoulder (with one paw on my shoulder), attempting to sit on my lap and meanwhile I was thinking to myself.... "What the hell was I thinking? Why am I driving 90KMH down a highway with a puppy clambering all over me just to go for a drive? I am absolutely nuts!" So to justify it all, I drove to a provincial park that is just a few minutes away, so Bear could discover what Chile loves most in the world.....Ferns, moss and inhaling chlorophyll on a cedar trail. I was in my glory, and actually feeling a little homesick for our Sproat Lake property. We had so many of these majestic trees with moss dripping from them. Our 1/2 acre has a few evergreens at the driveway and 3 fruit trees in the back. The rest of the evergreens are on the other side of our fence. I just hope our neighbours never cut them down.
