June 14th is my big sister's birthday. This incredible woman occupies a very special, very big place in my heart. Because we are 14 years apart, I imagine our relationship is different than sisters who are closer in years. We have many differences in taste (she of the Caribbean palette of colours, and me of the 'blend with the rain forest' cotton-Ginny clothes). She loves spicy and exotic food, while I prefer the tamer 'prairie-white-food '; she is adventurous, loves exploring and is quite willing to try new things. I need to dissect a map before heading to the next town to go shopping. She doesn't know how to enjoy quiet/meditation time/daytime naps, whereas I am the pro in that area. She calmly and lovingly prepares awesome meals. My favourite cooking utensils are scissors and speed dial. But all those differences (including age) just melt away when we are together. My mom always said it made her heart soar when she could watch Joanne & I together. I lived away from the family nucleus for 20 years, so we didn't see too much of each other during that time. But now fate (and my mother's spirit) have planted us in the same region. In fact, for one year we lived within blocks of each other. I truly am blessed to have such a wonderful loving being to call my sister. I once gave her a card that said "I smile because you are my sister; I laugh because there is nothing you can do about it!". Believe me, there were times I'm sure she wanted to 'return me'; but I'm trying to make it up to her now.....
On her birthday last week, I took the day off work and kidnapped her. I drove her to the Kingfisher Resort near Courtenay, where we dined outside and enjoyed a menu that didn't even mention the word 'burger'. She ordered an exotic sandwich that towered on her plate. The presentation was amazing. And so was the dessert they brought her - another tower of artistry. The flavours were amazing too.

3 hours later, we left the resort and drove to Courtenay where we explored the small shops in the downtown core. We had great fun finding all kinds of things to touch.
Thanks Joanne, for being you and for letting me kidnap you on your special day.
I love you sooo much.

What a fabulous day!! What's that bright thing in the sky?? Is that, the sun?? Nice that it came out for Aunty Joanne's b-day!
Oh my goodness! You must be the sweetest little sister in the world. The way you talk about your big sister, and honor her and love her. Reminds me lots of Isabella. Including the part about her wanting to get rid of you from time to time. Bella knows how to get the best and worst out of her sister.
Its wonderful that you two still celebrate and love each other through the years. I hope my girls do the same through their whole lives.
